Although DNA can be isolated from a variety of sources, there are some general considerations for choosing a cell. They are:

  • The cell should have a nucleus containing DNA
  • The cell should be viable (alive). Although DNA can be isolated form dead cells as well, they are sometimes fragmented in dead cells therefore a viable cell is preferable for good quality DNA
  • The cell should not be infected with a virus. If an infected cell is used, the viral genetic material will conaminate the source DNA

What part of the cell must be broken down to extract DNA?

In a eukaryote cell the double walled nuclear membrane must be broken, or pierced to release the DNA into the cytoplasm and then the phospholipid bilayer would have to be breached next to release the DNA from this type cell A prokaryote cell would need both its cell wall and its plasma membrane breached to release the DNA from the cell.

Why did you use RNA instead of DNA to make proteins?

In order to use DNA directly to make proteins, DNA would have to leave the nucleus, which would make it more susceptible to damage. Since it is the template for making proteins, it would be too risky to expose it to the rest of the cell.

Why do you have to use alcohol to extract DNA?

Because it is less dense than the alcohol and make it float

Why do scientists use the white blood cell when extracting DNA in gentic screening?

White blood cells (unlike red blood cells) have nuclei containing genetic material. Since DNA is present within the white blood cells and since blood is easy to obtain from the body, scientists use white blood cells to extract DNA

When you extract DNA why do you use salt?

Salt helps in breaking the protein chains around the nucleic acids

Can you use almond extract instead of vanilla extract?

You could use vanilla extract, but the taste would be different. you are bettere off going with almond instead

What cells would I use to extract DNA from a living person?

Any cells can be used as you will find DNA in almost all of them (a few exceptions are red blood cells, platelets, etc.) but even where one specific cell in a tissue has no DNA many adjacent cells in the sample will have DNA.

Some organisms use singlestranded rather than doublestranded DNA In these organisms which enzyme would probably not be needed for DNA replication?

Some viruses have single stranded DNA molecules. These viruses do not have the machinery to synthesise the DNA on their own. They insert their DNA in a living cell where the DNA synthesis takes place.

How does cell create a protein?

They use the ribosomes to connect strands from your DNA

How does the DNA work in cell cycles?

During interphase, the cell grows and makes a copy of its DNA. During the mitotic (M) phase, the cell separates its DNA into two sets and divides its cytoplasm, forming two new cells.

How would you use DNA in a sentence?

The DNA of a cat is different from that of a human.

What purpose would a cell use a lipid monomer?

The purpose a cell would have to use a lipid monomer would be for use for the cell membrane. The cell membrane protects the contents of the cell.
