No civilization worshipped the Buddha. He was a man who used his intellect to determine the cause of human suffering and its resolution. Buddha was not and is not generally considered a god. Some Buddhists see him as a creator, and a god whom they pray to. In ancient China and in modern day China you bow to elders and give them respect, Buddhist followers bow down to Buddha all in the floor to show him respect and honor; he is not worshiped but he is praised. These are not the same thing, An example of this is if you are 96 years old and I am 18. I meet you and respect and know you and your wisdom. I bow down to you showing you how respectful of your wisdom I am.
Both civilizations worshiped the sun god and practiced in human sacrifices. Their temples were also extremely similar in design. The periods in which they existed in Central & South America are also very similar (added to above).
