Stromatolites have been dated back to as far as 3.4 billion years ago, and are amongst the oldest known fossils found on Earth. Stromatolites are still present today, and can be found in very salty lakes, and marine lagoons.
The platypus has always been in Australia. There is fossil evidence to indicate that its ancestor, a larger creature with teeth instead of grinding plates, was once found on the continent.
If it's never been found than we don't know about it.
