How To Recover Dining Chair Cushions?
Cushioned chairs may be more comfortable than hard ones at a dining table, but they can also become very dingy. Dropped food and constant use lead to stains and wear that can’t be easily cleaned up. Thankfully, it’s not too difficult to recover the cushions on your dining chairs and leave them looking like new. Step 1: Measure the seats of your dining chairs. Add three inches to each side of these measurements to know how large you’ll need to cut squares of new fabric to cover the cushions. Use these measurements to decide how much fabric to buy. Step 1: Choose new fabric for your dining chair cushions. Choose a sturdy, heavy-duty fabric. Upholstery fabric or indoor-outdoor fabric are good choices. Keep in mind that a busy pattern will hide stains better than a plain color. Step 2: Treat the new fabric with a stain-resistant spray, such as Scotchgard. Follow package directions to ensure your chair cushions will look nice for as long as possible. Step 3: Turn your dining chairs over and unscrew each seat from its base. Step 4: Cut out squares from the new fabric using the measurements you obtained earlier. Use pinking shears to minimize later shredding of the edges. Step 5: Lay a square of the new fabric wrong-side-up on the floor. Center a chair seat, also wrong-side-up, on the fabric. Pull one end of the fabric around to the back side of the seat. Use a staple gun to attach it to the seat. Step 6: Pull the opposite end of the fabric around to the back side of the seat. Stretch it tight and staple it in place. Step 7: On one of the remaining sides, fold the corners of loose fabric in toward the center. Then pull the fabric to the back and staple it in place. Repeat on the other side, making sure to pull the fabric tight. Step 8: Trim any excess fabric as necessary, especially if it covers the screw holes. Make sure the fabric is pulled tight across the chair cushion and that it’s straight. Make any adjustments as necessary. Step 9: Place the chair seat back onto the base and line up the screw holes. Reattach the seat to the base. Step 10: Repeat for the remaining chairs.

Desk sets are wonderful for keeping your desk clean, and organized. These steps will show you show to make your very own desk set consisting of a pencil holder, stamp roll holder, and card caddy using nothing more than a soup can, a large tuna fish can, 23 oz cardboard laundry detergent box, and some scrap fabric. Use whatever color, or style of fabric you want to use to decorate your desk set. Step 1. First remove all labels from the soup and tuna fish cans. Clean them out thoroughly making sure you don't cut fingers on the edges of the can. If you do find a sharp edge or a burr on the can you can use a small file to smooth out the burr and sharp edges. Step 2. First will be the pencil holder. Measure around the soup can and add 1” to your measurement. Step 3. Measure the height of the soup can and add 3” to your measurement. Step 4. Cut out a piece of the fabric from your measurements you just made. Step 5. You should now have a rectangular cut piece of fabric. Lay the fabric decorative side down on a flat surface. Along one of the long edges you will fold the fabric 1/2” to the non-decorative side of the fabric. Step 6. Take your hot iron and press the fold you just made on along the long edge. Step 7. You will now do the same thing for steps 5 and 6, but this time you will press one of the short ends of the fabric. You should end up with one short end and one long end folded 1/2” onto the non-decorative side of the fabric and pressed with your iron. Step 8. With the fabric laid down on the flat surface with the decorative side down, place the soup on it's side onto the fabric. The pressed long edge of the fabric should be along the bottom of the can. With a glue gun, glue the non-pressed short side of the fabric along the side of the can, just enough to hold it in place is all you need. Step 9. Wrap the fabric around the soup can keeping the pressed long edge of the fabric even with the bottom of the can. When the fabric has been wrapped around the soup can, glue the pressed short end of the fabric down to the can completely securing it in place. Step 10. Glue the excess fabric to the inside of the can. Step 11. Tie a length of raffia straw around the can, then tie a bow around a small wooden pencil, and tie the ends into a second bow, trim the ends as needed. You now have completed creating your pencil holder. Step 12. Now for the stamp roll holder, you will measure around the large tuna fish can and add 1” to your measurement. Step 13. Measure the height of the can and add 1” to your measurement. Step 14. Cut out a piece of fabric from your measurements you just made. Step 15. Measure the diameter on the top of the can and add 1” to your measurement. Cut 2 fabric squares from your measurement. Step 16. Take both fabric squares and lay them on a flat surface with the decorative side down. Fold each fabric square in half. Using your iron, press the fold onto both fabric squares. Step 17. Now glue your pressed square over the top of the can, matching the folds across the center of the can. You should end up with a slit across the center of the top of the can. Step 18. With the other piece of fabric you will fold both long edges back 1/2” and press them with your iron. Step 19. Fold back 1/2” of the short edge of the fabric and press it with your iron. You will end up with your fabric folded and pressed on both long edges, and one short edge. Step 20. Glue the fabric around the can, gluing the pressed short edge to the unpressed short edge when down wrapping. Ensuring both pressed long edges are even with the top and bottom of the can. Step 21. Take three different stamps and glue them on the fabric on the side of the stamp holder for decoration. Tie a length of raffia straw around the stamp holder and tie a double bow. Trim the ends as needed. Step 22. You have now completed your stamp roll holder to go along with your desk top pencil holder. Take a roll of stamps, place inside the can through the slits with a couple of the stamps from the roll started through the slit. Step 23. Now for the card holder. Remove the lid of the cardboard laundry box. Step 24. Measure around the box, and add 1” to your measurement. Step 25. Measure the height of the box. Multiply your measurement by 2, and add 1/2” to your final measurement. Step 26. Cut out a piece of fabric from the measurements determined. Step 27. Fold back 1/2” of a long edge, and a short edge. Press both edges with your iron. Step 28. With the pressed long edge of the fabric even with the bottom of the box, wrap the fabric around the box. Glue the short pressed edge of the fabric onto the box to hold the fabric securely in place. Step 29. Wrap a length of raffia straw around the box and tie with a double bow. Trim the ends as needed. Step 30. Punch a hole in one corner of an envelope. Tie the envelope to the raffia straw with a piece of raffia thread. You have now competed your card holder to go along with your pencil holder, and stamp roll holder desk set. You have now completed your own desk top set for your desk to keep things organized. These steps can serve as a template in creating other desk top set items that you can think of. You can even decorate them for your own personal style, or create them for others. You could personalize the desk top set by gluing letters of your or someone else's initial on them. You can decorate them with small pictures, sea shells, or whatever else comes to mind.
