In the years leading up the revolution, Franklin spent much of his time in Europe. Especially of note, in England he argued for American interests and became popular in the eyes of many colonists for his role in repealing the stamp act.
He was elected as the first post master general of the United States by the Second Continental Congress and served in that role when the war broke out.
He was part of the five man committee that was elected to draft the Declaration of Independence.
For most of the actual war however, Franklin served as the young country's ambassador to France and worked to convince them to join the revolution on the side of the colonists. He did not return to the United States until 1785. (The war was officially ended by the Treaty of Paris 1783 signed on September the 3rd.)
