Almost all of the slaves brought fresh from Africa would have followed any one of the many different traditional religions practised by their people. It is from this mixture of traditional religions that the Voudou (Voodoo) religion of Haiti has since emerged.
Once the slaves had arrived in America most of them were converted to Christianity by European missionary priests. However, some didn't convert (especially in Haiti) and this is where we get Voudou.
