In the 1950's and 60's, the most used discipline methods were writing sentences, standing in the corner with your face to the wall, and paddling. In fact, it was traditional at the school I attended for the teacher to show the class her (almost all teachers were women back then) paddle on the first day of school. The most common offenses were Chewing Gum and talking in class. Most often, the teacher only had to tell a student once to do something, except for talking in class, which some students just couldn't seem to stop, so they ended up standing in the corner.
Paddling was done very infrequently, but when it was, it was done by the teacher in the hallway outside the classroom, where the class heard the "smack." Though it might seem barbaric now, children back then accepted it as part of growing up.
There's one other method teachers used back then. That was writing a note to the student's parents that had to be signed by the parent and taken back to the teacher. Many children dreaded that more than anything, even being paddled at school.
