Mad Cow Disease is one such disease. It is caused by a prion, an inanimate chain of amino acids that can twist in wrong ways to make faulty proteins, often twisting into knots. Other, similar proteins also end up twisting in such a pattern, and ultimately form long rods that damage brain function. It was discovered in the mid-1980s in Britain, has no vaccine or cure, and a 100% mortality rate. It cannot be killed by thorough cooking, due to its protein nature. Luckily, it's very rare. So you can go back to your hamburger now.
