Centuries of European rule have left their mark on the "typical" South African breakfast. It's a tea-and-coffee culture, so breakfast is often a cup of something hot (with lots of sugar added) served alongside something bready. That can be a piece of toast with jam or cheese, a rusk (a thick and tooth-breakingly hard cookie), buttered bread, or even a hot dog bun.
There are different types of foods that are eaten in South Africa. Some of these include the traditional biltong and dried fruit snack, mealie soup, carrot bredie, green bean salad, komkomer sambal, geel rys, bobotie and pineapple sherbet.
South African food can be divided into two categories which are Traditional African Cooking and Exotic African Specialities. Traditional food includes mieliepap (maize meal porridge), carrots, beetroots and meat such as Goats and Sheep. Exotic food can include Tripe or offal, amadumbe and umngqusho.
