During WWII (I can remember just the end of it) where we had tar paper blinds and when the air raid siren would go off that meant ALL lights were to go out in the town or city and all tar paper blinds were pulled down. If you didn't a Marshall would come to the door and you could be fined for this. When the air raid sirens went off it meant it was possible to likely there were enemy bombers close by and people either huddled in their darkened homes or if out in public would scurry to the first air raid shelter available. England went through much of this and it was a long while before people could get over it. The skies would light up by the big spot lights from the city to try and spot the bombers and if bombs were let go by the bombers there would be a whistling sound and everyone would hold their breath wondering where it would land and if it would land on where they were hiding. I only remember the very end of the war and was never directly into the full throws of bombings.
