Hay helps them keep warm when they eat it in winter, but other than that they dont need it if they have lots of nice grass to eat, just a food suppliment if you dont have enough grass or if it dies in winter.

Usually they eat a variety of things, if they are available. They eat grass, weeds, hay, oats, pellets for old horses, milk for young horses, and occasionally carrots, apples, turnips, and corncobs. They'll eat other stuff too, but those are some of the more common things...

Horses are herbivores and eat mostly grass or hay because that is what they have evolved to eat. Their stomachs are relatively small and can only hold so much food at one time so they tend o eat small amounts of food often. People will feed horses grains and pellets if the horse is competing and needs more nutrients. You can also give them many different types of fruit and vegetables as treats.

Horses don't 'Need' alfalfa. It is fed to horses that are hard keepers, on poor grass hay, or that participate in moderate or heavier workloads to meet their caloric and protein needs without feeding grains or as much grain.

Horses are herbivores. Their natural diet is grass. Hay is simply dried grass. By cutting and drying grass in the summer, it can be stored for the horse to eat through the winter.

Because hay is basically grass, and grass is what horses have evolved eating for thousands of years. It is natural for them to eat, and the best thing for them to eat.
