Well over 99% of the people who live in deserts reside in or near cities and towns where they can purchase nearly any food they desire to eat at markets and stores or restaurants. My home in the Chihuahuan Desert is about a half mile from a Wal*Mart Supercenter and I have no problem keeping my fridge and cupboard well stocked. I also have quite a number of fast food restaurants and other dining establishments within a short walking distance .

∙ 13y agoIn the Sonoran Desert (southwestern America and northern Mexico) some delicious native foods include mesquite pods (ground into flour), staghorn cholla pods, cactus fruit (especially prickly pear), napolitos (the pad of the prickly pear), agave (the nectar or distilled into liquor), and yucca root. Chili peppers are a common staple; they grow well in the hot dry climate and they make you sweat, which helps you tolerate the heat. The Sonoran Desert is one of the lusher deserts of the world, with plenty of food, if you know where to look. If you were in the Sahara desert, you'd have less luck.

I live in the Chihuahuan Desert and have a Wal*Mart SuperCenter a half mile from my home where I can purchase nearly any food I desire. There are also a number of restaurants and fast food establishments within a short walking distance of my home. For those who live far from a town or city, many of them grow at least part of their own food and purchase other food items when they make an occasional trip into town to stock up on supplies.
