A hiccup is a sudden, involuntary contraction (spasm) of the diaphragm muscle. When the muscle spasms, the vocal cords snap shut, producing the hiccup sound.

Common causes of hiccups include:

1.eating too quickly,

2.eating or drinking too much,

3.diseases that irritate the nerves that control the diaphragm,

4.abdominal surgery,

5.strokes or

6.brain tumors,

7.noxious fumes, and

8.certain medications.

Most cases of hiccups can be cured or resolve in a short time, and rarely are a medical emergency.

Can fibroids cause muscle spasms?

I have 3 golf size fibroids, occassionaly I get spasms and when I go to touch the area it feels like a large knot, after about a minute it goes away. I do not know for sure if this is one of the fibroids. When this happens, it is just all of a sudden. The strain feeling stays around for awhile.

Why do you get hicups?

Breathing is controlled by the diaphram, which is controlled by the brain. When the brain sends incorrect signals to the diaphram, it spasms and rapidly expands and contracts. This is called hiccuping.
