The Mayflower was blown off course by a storm and landed in Massachusetts where they set up a colony in an abandoned Native American camp. They lived on the ship and also found the baskets of dried corn that had been stored by the tribe that had lived there. This saved them. The reason these places and events are important is because they are part of the common history of the United States.

They are the same. The Puritans got permission from King Charles 1 to build a colony which they named "Massachusetts Bay". This remained the full name throughout the colonial period, but the word "Bay" dropped in common parlance. As a result, when Massachusetts Bay Colony became the State of Massachusetts, "Bay" was dropped altogether.
