There are so many answers to this question that it's absurd. A narrower scope would be helpful.
That said, we share a common root language. We also share a fairly similar belief system. We're all products of the Enlightenment. We're all rooted in democratic values and the liberal tradition.
Among other things, of course. In a broad sense however, these things pop to mind first.
Angola, Portugal, Suriname, and the United States of America have a number of points in common.
1. All four of them have coasts bordered by the Atlantic Ocean.
2. All four of them have capital cities on or near the Atlantic coast and on at least one body of water. Luanda, Angola is on the Atlantic Ocean. Lisboa [Lisbon], Portugal is located where the Tagus River empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Paramaribo, Suriname is located on the Suriname River 9.3 miles [1.5 kilometers] inland from the Atlantic Ocean. Washington, DC is located on the Potomac River about 100 miles from the Atlantic Ocean.
3. Angola, Suriname, and the United States have all received significant numbers of Portuguese either as colonists or as immigrants. Portugal began a trading relationship with Angola in the 15th century that soon led to colonizing Angola. Portuguese Jews escaping the Inquisition settled in Suriname as early as 1639. There were scattered Portuguese settlements in Newport, Rhode Island and Charleston, South Caroilna in colonial America. A steady wave began in the early 19th century to whaling industry centers such as New England; Hawaii; and California from San Francisco Bay to San Joaquin Valley.
