Poptropica is a free online game site that plays games on the site's server. There is no requirement to provide any personal information. The site is open to players between the ages of 6 and 15 (there is no age verification, as ages given are used only to determine which games are provided).
The basic game play of Poptropica is solitaire island quests, in which the user must solve a logical problem in the form of an adventure with several parts. Each island quest is separate and (as of 2010) there are ten islands. Various advertisers such as Disney and LEGO also sponsor mini-quest games of a temporary duration.
While there are competitive multi-player games on each island, the players cannot exchange personal information or engage in actual chat with other users. Pre-scripted conversation is provided. There are, however, multi-player rooms that may be purchased by users, to which they can invite their real-life friends. These are called the multiverse rooms and are accessed by codes which change over varying periods of time.
