For me, Buddhism caught my belief because of the glimpses of peace that I have seen through meditation. There isn't much to actually believe. We do not think of Buddha as a God, he was just a regular guy that now we can look upon depictions of him for inspiration that maybe we can, at some point, reach enlightenment in this lifetime. If you are asking about the reincarnation thing, I do not know. I do not believe one way or the other and you do not HAVE to believe it to be Buddhist, you just need to believe that through meditation and following the precepts you can feel peace and share it with other beings.

Buddhism is a religion to about 300 million people around the world. The word comes from budhi: "to awaken." It has its origins about 2,500 years ago when Siddhartha Gotama, known as the Buddha, was himself awakened (enlightened) at the age of 35.

To many, Buddhism goes beyond religion and is more of a philosophy or way of life. The Buddhist path can be summed up as:

(1) to lead a moral life,

(2) to be mindful and aware of thoughts and actions, and

(3) to develop wisdom and understanding.

It depends. Some people think it's good if they are a Buddhist, and others stick to their own religion and don't like Buddhism. I don't even know what Buddhism consists of.

Answer:

There are several things about Buddhism that make it "work" for many people.

  • You don;t have to subjugate your ideas to what you hear from "experts". Buddha said "Do not accept what you hear by report, do not accept tradition, do not accept a statement because it is found in our books, nor because it is in accord with your belief, nor because it is the saying of your teacher....Be ye lamps unto yourselves."
It focuses on the here and now Buddha thought that observance of rites and prayers to the gods is hopeless, and that one should focus attention on the here and now.
Idle speculation on matters suc as creation and the meaning of life are not seen as productive Buddhism purposefully avoids speculation and issues of philosophy. On such questions, Buddha maintained a silence, indicating "opinions tend not to edification".
You have to work out your own path through eternity, no deity will bail you out with miracles or a divine intervention There is no God in Buddhism. Buddha said "(one must) Work out your own salvation with diligence." Buddha further suggests that "Those who rely upon themselves only, not looking to assistance by anyone besides themselves, it is they who reach the topmost height." Further there are no supernatural powers which offer a shortcut to answers. Buddha stated that this only diverts effort and the need for the hard practical task of self-advances. "By this yea shall know that a man is not my disciple - that he tries to work a miracle".

I don't know every exact detail about Buddhism; I will say that now. But with all due respect, I don't understand how a wise man like Buddah's wordscould spark a new religion and have so many people fall astray from God and follow his words. Buddah was a man; we musn't forget that, no matter how wise. If Buddah inspired this religion, I don't understand how they say Buddhism is true; it's right.
