No specific information about Aunt Em's age was given in the original 1900 book edition of 'The Wizard of Oz'. But she was described as someone who had had the happiness and joy bleached out of her by the difficult conditions under which she and her family tried to make a living in the bleak, harsh plains of Kansas. She might have been in her late 40's, possibly early 50's. That certainly is the age range into which the character appeared to fit in the beloved 1939 film version.

Four hundred fifty (450) is a realistic number as to the number of Dorothy's lines in "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, the total appears to be 598 according to the scripts available on the internet. But some of the lines are incomplete. Others are interrupted by set directions. Therefore, 450 seems a more accurate count after consolidating breaks and removing directional lines.

Telling her to get into the cellar and asking where she has been in the book and telling her that she imagines things and needs to stay out of trouble in the film are what Aunt Em says to Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, Aunt Em just says two things in the original 1900 book edition. In the first chapter on the cyclone, she says, "Quick Dorothy, run for the cellar." In the last chapter back home, she says, "My darling child! Where in the world did you come from?"

In contrast, in the beloved 1939 film version, Aunt Em says more things. But the words tend to all be on the order of warning Dorothy against imaginations running wild and being more concerned with practical things. For example, in the beginning, Aunt Em was forever cautioning Dorothy "We're trying to count! (...) We're busy!" and "Now, Dorothy, dear, stop imagining things. You always get yourself in a fret over nothing. (...) Now you just help us out today, and find yourself a place where you won't get into any trouble" and finally "Now, we can't go against the law, Dorothy. I'm afraid poor Toto will have to go." In the end, Aunt Em's words were along the same lines of "You just had a bad dream" and "Oh, we dream lots of silly things when we... ."

The farmer's wife is what Aunt Em represents in "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, Aunt Em is the wife of Uncle Henry and therefore one of two guardians to the little orphan girl, Dorothy Gale. The original 1900 book edition has her washing dishes when the story begins. In the beloved 1939 film version, she counts chickens with Uncle Henry.

The character of Auntie Em had 27 lines in the 1939 film version of The Wizard of Oz. [1] Fifty-seven, fifty-eight [chickens in incubator] ... . [2] Dorothy, please! We're trying to count! Fifty-eight ... . [3] Seventy - Dorothy, please! [4] Dorothy! Dorothy! We're busy! [5] I know, but we all got to work out our own problems, Henry. [6] Oh, I hope we got them in time. [7] Here, here, what's all this jabber-wapping when there's work to be done? I know three shiftless farm hands that'll be out of a job before they know! [8] I saw you tinkering with that contraption, Hickory. Now, you and Hunk get back to that wagon! [9] Well, don't start posing for it now. Here, here - can't work on an empty stomach. Have some crullers. [10] Just fried. [11] It's no place for Dorothy about a pig sty! Now you go feed those hogs before they worry themselves into anemia! [12] Now, Dorothy, dear, stop imagining things. You always get yourself into a fret over nothing. [13] Now, you just help us out today, and find yourself a place where you won't get into any trouble. [14] How would it be if she keeps him tied up? He's really gentle - with gentle people, that is. [15] Now we can't go against the law, Dorothy. I'm afraid poor Toto will have to go. [16] Dorothy! [17] Put him in the basket, Henry. [18] Almira Gulch, just because you own half the county doesn't mean you have the power to run the rest of us! For twenty-three years, I've been dying to tell you what I thought of you! And now - well, being a Christian woman, I can't say it! [19] Dorothy! Dorothy! [20] Henry! Henry! I can't find Dorothy! She's somewhere out in the storm! Dorothy! [21] Dorothy - Dorothy - where are you? It's me - it's Auntie Em. We're trying to find you. Where are you? [22] Dorothy - Dorothy! It's me - Aunt Em. [23]Wake up, honey. [24] Dorothy. Dorothy, dear. It's Aunt Em, darling. [25] Yes, darling. [26] There, there, lie quiet now. You just had a bad dream. [27] Oh, we dream lots of silly things when we - .

Middle-aged, serious and thin is the way that Aunt Em looks in "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, author and Oz series originator Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 - May 6, 1919) describes Aunt Em as being pretty with sparkling eyes and rosy complexion in her youth. He indicates that after years of being the wife of a struggling farmer on the harsh Kansas prairies she is gaunt, thin and unsmiling. That also is about the way that Aunt Em is presented in the beloved 1939 film version.

Youth versus old age, spontaneity versus reserve, and daydreaming versus practicality are comparisons of Dorothy to Aunt Em in "The Wizard of Oz."Specifically, Dorothy is heading toward her teen years whereas Aunt Em is old and even older than her years what with all the hard work and worry of working and holding onto a farm. Dorothy does not yet have experience in controlling her emotions whereas Aunt Em knows the heartbreak of the harsh life on the Kansas prairies and is used to few words and even fewer emotions. Dorothy therefore can laugh with her cheery pet dog Toto whereas Aunt Em is all about keeping family and farm together. But despite their differences, the two are alike in their courage, loyalty, persistence and straightforwardness, and that most likely is why Dorothy misses Aunt Em so much during the visit to the colorful, magical lands of Oz.
