All 1922 cents were minted in Denver and therefore should have a D mintmark. However, some have only a partial D and some none at all. Three different sets of dies produced these coins. Those identified as die pairs 1 and 3 have been determined to be a common error cause by grease or debris on the die. But in the case of die pair 2, the dies came together without a planchet, destroying the reverse die and damaging the obverse. Mint workers trying to salvage the obverse polished a bit too agressively removing the mintmark and nearly removing the second 2. The reverse die was replaced with a new die and production continued. These "Die Pair 2" cents sell for several hundred dollars in well-worn condition and a few thousand in high grades.
