The ER is a microscopic series of tunnels used in transport and storage. There are smooth ER (SER) and Rough ER (RER). The rough part of the ER are ribosomes. The RER is responsible for several specialized functions: protein translation, folding and transport of proteins to be used in the cell membrane (e.g. transmembrane receptors and other integral membrane proteins), or to be secreted (exocytosed) from the cell. (The latter two with the aid of the Golgi apparatus). The SER is primarily responsible for lipid synthesis.

The rough ER modifies proteins and ships them to the Golgi apparatus for further modification and shipping. The smooth ER produces lipids. The ER also contains Calcium ions which can be released as second messengers in signaling transduction within the cell to further cellular responses.

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an organelle (a specialized cell part) that appears in all eukaryotic cells. The ER's main function is to manufacture and transport material to other locations. It also helps protects the cell nucleus.
