Best Answer

It is usually a sign of poor water quality but there are other possibilities to the cause...

  • It may have got caught on sharp decor
  • It may have been bitten by another fish
  • It could be fin rot which is usually caused by water conditions not being right, this includes not conditioning tap water, infrequent water changes or spikes in ammonia or nitrites.
