When a rabbit raises his (or her) ears, that means his interest has been piqued.

Maybe there was a noise, and the rabbit is a little alarmed?

Maybe the rabbit is laying down, and you have been talking to him and trying to get his attention - and he slowly raises one ear and points it at you, or perhaps cocks it to the side?

Rabbits use their ears to communicate - even so little a thing as where the ear opening is pointed makes a difference in terms of what the rabbit is "saying."

Generally speaking, when the ears are up and pointed out, the rabbit is at attention.

See the related link below Language of Lagomorphs - it talks all about rabbit communication, including ear positions.

What does it mean when a rabbit's ear won't stay up?

Assuming that the rabbit is not a lop earred breed, one may assume that the rabbit has damage to the cartilage in it's ear. OR, if summer time, because of extreme heat the rabbit's ears grow faster than the babies do the cartilage is not strong enough to hold up the heavy ears. In some cases the rabbit will grow into it's ears but some may remain damaged for life

Why are some rabbits are called lop-eared?

Rabbits have floppy ears because, a rabbit breeder a long time ago selected a rabbit with "deformed ears" ( lopped ears) and bred it with a staight eared rabbit. And they created lop eared rabbits.

Is there a difference between bunnies and rabbits?

first answer: No, there is no difference between a bunny and a rabbit. The word "bunny" is just a nickname for rabbits -- it derives from the old-time word for "rabbit," which was "coney" (pronounced with a soft "o," like "honey"). The word "rabbit" actually used to mean baby coneys -- nowadays, "rabbit" refers to the animal in general, "bunny" is a nickname, and babies are called "kits" (or "kittens"). second answer: I think they do have a difference between them because the bunny has their ears bend down forward and the rabbit ears stays up response: You are thinking of lop-eared rabbits. Bunnies with ears that bend down are called lops or lop-eared. Bunnies with ears that stay up don't have a special name.

Why do rabbits ears stick up?

When they are calm, or sleeping a rabbit will lay the ears down. At this time they don't want to here. I f startled the ears go up to here. Some rabbits, (flopped eared) are born with long ears that hang down. This is because of the breed.

How do you carry your rabbit?

this sounds mean but the proper way to hold a rabbit is to hold the ears and the legs . left hand holds the ears and the right one holds the legs that way the rabbit can not bite or kick . ___________________________________________________________________ you should NEVER pick it up by its ears or legs! it causes them pain ALOT would you like to be picked up by your ears? no, would you like to be carried about by your legs? no you could brake a bone in their legs! and they would more than likely be scared of you and try and bite you every time you go near it the best way to carry them is put one hand under the bottom and the other underneath them on their chest area and gently place them on your chest while you still have one hand under their bum and one hand on their back (if you feel they will try and jump or fall) if you got your rabbit from a pet store they should of showed you how to handle it!
