Op. is short for the Latin word Opus - meaning Work.

When a composer's work is classified, set in order, and published, each major work is given a number (approximately in order of composition).

When a scholar does the classification (often after the composer's death) the scholar's initial is often given as the prefix to the opus number.

Mozart's works were sorted and put in order by Köchel, so the Mozart Piano Concerto #23 (for example) is K.488.

What does 'classical music' mean?

In music, "classical" has two meanings. The generalized term, "Classical Music" denotes art music composed for performance, as opposed to popular songs, rock, or theater music. The more specialized meaning, within the larger category of classical music, denotes symphonies or other types of music composed in the mid- to late-18th century through the early 19th, by Haydn, Mozart, early Beethoven and their contemporaries, known as the "classical period". Alternately, "classic" can just mean a favorite or standard for many years, like classic rock, classic bluegrass, etc.

Are Classical music melodies in African music?

Technically, no. Classical music is it's own genre, and from a certain time period (~ 1759 - 1830). It is also 'Western music', while 'African music' is not. Thus, they are two completely separate entities. However, that does necessarily not mean that certain musical ideas present in classical music are not present in African music, because music can do whatever it wants and show up where ever it pleases. It simply means that these ideas are not intentionally placed in the music - it was just a coincidence.

What is difference class music and film music?

Do you mean the difference between classical music and film music?Classical music was composed in the period from 1550 to 1900 (more or less).Film music came into existence in the late 1800's/early 1900's.Film music often borrows elements from classical music, but from other music forms as well (for example jazz, and rock). Both music forms have also much in common. When you put on a dvd, turn off the sound from the tv, and put on a classical piece of music at the same time, the classical music can often compliment the movie you're watching!
