The 1978 400 xx blocks were slightly changed from the "500557" casting used from mid 1975-1977. They are a somewhat beefier casting for use in the Trans am and Formula w-72 400s. They are considered stronger than the "557" block but weaker than 1967-1974 400s. For more info go to http://forums.performanceyears.com/forums/ (largest Pontiac info site on the web) and search for "blocks" in the race section. It has been discussed to death over the years.
That would be a HEAVY DUTY 400 Turbo
The Chevrolet small block 400 will bolt in place of the 305 but be sure to use a 400 flywheel or flex plate. Do not use the 305 flywheel or flex plate on the 400.
It depends on the 4 cylinder it is out of. I know that my dad had a 4 speed in his 78 truck that was originally out of 78 Pontiac Sunbird.
poop ANSWER: Wow really intelligent response! Anyhow, they are as follows: 400/180hp Automatic: YA,YU (standard L-78 engine) 400/220hp Automatic: X7 (L78-W72 engine) 400/220hp Manual: WC (L78-W72 engine) There were also two block castings in 1978 the standard passanger car "500557" and the revised "XX481988". Some of the standard L78 cars also received the XX block, it was basicly luck of the draw. The L78-W72 cars are believed to have all gotten the revised (stronger) XX block casting.
The 400 wasn't available in the El Camino in '78.

400 - 2x = 244 Therefore, 2x = 400 - 244 = 156 Therefore, x = 156/2 = 78 Therefore, you would be 78 years old.
400 - 78 - 22 --84 - 16 - 81 - 19 - 27 = 400 - 78 - 22 + 84 - 16 - 81 - 19 - 27 = 241
Depends on which engine it is. There were 3 basic options...California not included, for the 78 T/A. The entry level Pontiac 400 and Oldsmobile 403 were rated at around 185HP. You could also order a 200HP (maybe for 78 a 220HP) 400....which basically came with a little higher compression head. I know that the 220HP was offered for '79...but it's been a while since I've looked up those specs and do not remember if the '78 was 200 or 220.
78$
im guessing a 350 but with a little work i would give it a big block 400 for the power.Any Pontiac engine from 1969-1979 will fit that Firebird. These would include 350,400, and 455 engines. They are all externally the same size as the 301 and will bolt up to your existing transmission. Anything earlier than 69 will not have the correct motor mount holes in the block. You'll need to use the engine/frame mounts that are on your 301. One other thing to consider, the other engines will be about 150 lbs heavier than that 301. You'll want to change to say the '78 T/A 400 front springs.
it should be any 4 bolt main small block, like a 305 350 383 400 327 you could even upgrade to a big block, but you may run into some trouble with engine mounts.
