The helicopter allowed US fighting men to fight more battles in one day, then any other servicemen in history. In the past, men had to walk (march), or ride a land vehicle into battle; that took days or weeks. The helicopter dropped a grunt off into a firefight...picked him up...then flew him into another one. He could have fought 2 or 3 separate battles in ONE DAY. This same machine affected the NVA and VC enemy. They had to be alert for allied forces being dropped off ANYWHERE at ANYTIME. The number 1 most devastating technology weapon of the Vietnam War was the B-52 Stratofortess high altitude bomber (Strategic Air Command-SAC). This aircraft was the most feared weapon by the enemy. And it was the most impressive weapon for any and all allied servicemen that experienced it's bombing. One hundred and eight 750 pound bombs could be dropped from ONE B-52 BOMBER! That's approximately equal to a flight of 6 WW2 B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. Any allied fighting man (Marine, Sailor, Airman, or Soldier) present within a mile of those bombers, experienced an "earth quake" of major proportions. The rumbling effect (thunder and earth vibrations) were enough to make your skin crawl and the hairs stand up right on your body. A mile long cloud of black smoke would hover over the strike area; and if the strike was at night...explosions of volcanic red colors would carpet the same distance of land...all accompanied by thunder and ground shaking vibrations of a major earth quake. When it was over, a series of fifteen foot deep Swimming Pools would be stretched out a mile long.
