The different belief system and adopted philosophies of Rome consistently restricted the growth of Christianity, particularly before the reign of Constantine. Rome's method of conquering different tribes, countries and ethnic groups was to assimilate their religion into the Roman society or identify foreign gods as being similar to a deity in their existing Pantheon. Christianity is monotheistic and therefore was very resistant to that mold. Additionally, Roman emperors like Nero and Diocletian persistently blamed and persecuted Christians, amplifying the Roman's contempt of the religion. When Constantine instated Christianity as the state religion, his role as the Head of the church (and his modern contemporary, the Pope's) included being Head of the pagan theologies as well. While this gave Christianity substantial political power, the Roman Catholic Church adopted pagan and Greek philosophies as a result of that Roman tradition, particularly in the Middle Ages.
