When warming up, you normally go hrader in order to pick up your pace and energy. A cool down is for when you finsish an exercise. You normally go at a low pace. Cool downs are good because it is bad to just stop immediatly after a good workout.

walking and stretching

According to the National Academy of Sports Medicine, a warm-up should consist of two key components the intensity of which should be determined by the individual's fitness level. the basic guidelines are as follows:

  • A minimum of 7-10 minutes of cardiovascular exercise is recommended, as increasing the temperature of your muscles improves their elasticity. This tends to decrease the odds of workout-related injuries such as pulled or torn muscles.
  • A stretching routine designed to stretch "tight", "synergistically dominant", or "over-active" muscles is recommended in order to further decrease the odds of injury, as well as to improve posture and movement with proper kinetic chain alignment. Typically, the de-conditioned (sedentary) individual should start with self myofascial release, before moving to static-isolated stretches as their condition improves, progressing finally to active-dynamic stretching techniques that mimic the movements in the workout to come.
