A NOOKbook (file format) is basically an ePub file with Adobe DRM, very much similar to Sony's ePub files, but with a slightly different Adobe DRM Version, so they cannot be opened by third party readers or software if they have DRM. There are (probably illegal or at least dubious) methods to circumvent DRM on NOOKbooks so they can be converted to ePub files readable by third party providers (e.g. Sony).
