Best Answer

The ancient Greeks became traders because the rough geography and poor farmland of Greece made growing crops and needed food supplies difficult. Many city states formed colonies in places like Ionia, and then traded with them, or traded with the colonies of other city states. They also traded with other places to get other materials besides food.

How did Greeces location on a rocky peninsula encourage its people to become traders and explorers?

The Greeks were forced to become traders and explorers due to their location on the Peloponnesus because the rocky soil couldn't support them. There wasn't good land for farming, and what good land there was was scarce. The Greeks began to colonize different places, like Ionia, where farming was better, and where they could get supplies from. Then they could trade with their colonies and still remain in Greece, which they wouldn't have been able to do otherwise. They had to explore these areas before they settled them, of course, and exploration was often necessary before trade could be established. Even city states like Sparta were forced to colonize to get the supplies they needed, and they used these and neighboring city states they had conquered for their supplies.

What was the major contribution of Phoenicians?

# The alphabet. The ancient Greeks had lost the use of their old alphabet, known as linear-B, during the Greek Dark Ages. When Greece began to emerge from the Dark Ages, it adopted and modified the Phoenician alphabet. The Romans, in turn, adopted and modified the Greek alphabet, to become the alphabet we use in the West. # Trade and commerce. The Phoenicians were great maritime traders. They established colonies all around the Mediterranean, including Carthage and even Spain. Rome was forced to become more outward-looking as a result of Phoenician expansion. # Religion. Some, but not all, of the ancient gods and theology of Greece were adopted from Phoenician influence.
