This was when King John (the King of England) was made to 'sign' (actually he placed is seal on it as he couldn't write) a document prepared for him his barons because he had ill treated them for many years, raising taxes and so on to fund his extravagant lifestyle. This document was known as the Magna Carta (or 'Great Charter') and became one of the bases of English law. The Magna Carta itself can still be seen iin the British Museum, Bloomsbury, London.
