I personally think it is when Jonas starts to accept his important and rewarding, yet difficult role as The Receiver and decides that he wants to receive more memories of the past from the Giver.
The story "The Giver" begins with an introduction to a world where everything is controlled and dictated by the government. The protagonist, Jonas, is about to turn 12 and is preparing for the Ceremony of Twelve where he will be assigned his future role in society.
IT is December, and Jonas was beginning to be frightened. No. Wrong words, Jonas thought. Frightened meant that deep, sickening feeling of something terrible about to happen. Frightened was the way he had felt a year ago when an unidentified aircraft had overflown the community twice. He had seen it both times. He had seen the sleek jet, almost a blur at its high speed, go past, and second later heard the blast of the sound that followed. Coming for the other direction.
It starts with a plane flying low over the city and deserted bicycles strewn across the streets.
