the press of a button activates a switch, connected to this button (in fact - the button is the switch). This allows electricity to flow and refer to the memory cell, with which this button is connected. Then the information from this memory cell comes to processor via control device. The control device sends it to processor's input device and processor processes it with the processing unit. After processing the information becomes a command and then the ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) in processor performs it. After a command is executed it becomes an information to display on computer's monitor. The information goes to the output device in processor and then flows by bus to VGA. VGA shows the image on a monitor.
The START button in a Microsoft Windows operating system is kind of "main menu" for accessing installed programs, settings, search features and much more. By default start button can be found from the bottom left corner of the screen.
On a desktop (more widely known as PC) computer if it's still on:
If you press the button for about or less than 1 second and then let it go, then it shuts down gently.
But when you HOLD it for about 5 seconds, sometimes a bit more or less, then it forces the computer to shutdown straight away and you'll get a black screen, that's all. But note that this is not recommended as it's dangerous to do that unless your computer's not working, ex: freezing etc.
On a laptop when it's still on:
It depends on the settings, and different computers. You know, you can change the settings. Most of the times the default functions are making the computer 'sleep' or 'hibernate', sorry, just (88.90% sure about this part).
When you HOLD it for a few seconds, or until it gives you the black screen, the same thing happens as to the desktop - force shutdown.
Hope I helped.

Step 1: Find the 'on' button. It probably looks like this (but might be square or oblong!): Step 2: Push the button. On some computers, the button lights up when the computer is on. ... Step 3: Now you need to log in.
It depends on what you are trying to hack, ex: if you are trying to hack into the Administrators account then while the computer is booting up ( immedietly when you turn it on write when you press the power button) Hold F8 the button not buttons(f, and 8).
Push the power button.
A toggle switch is like a light switch. You flick (or 'toggle') the switch on or off and it stays in that position until you flick it again. You could compare a push button switch to a key on a keyboard. When you press a key momentarily it will display one letter on the screen. If you hold down the key, the same letter will repeat (e.g. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa). Toggle switches can also look like push button switches. Most power buttons on a desktop computer tower is a toggle switch. The reset button on a computer tower is a push button switch.
The red button turns on the fuel pump when it is pushed on a Ford Escort.
