Mining and a World War.
Prosperity came to Canada after WWII. Canada spent a lot of money on the war but they were located next to the United States.
The United States came out of WWII unscathed from infrastructure destroying battles, unlike most of Europe.
They were also late to enter which allowed them to get paid for their efforts via the lend lease program Britain agreed to. The USA helped Britain save the world but got paid for it by Britain.
Many other European countries also owed the USA money from loans before and after the War.
USA had the manufacturing base to supply the rebuild efforts world wide. In fact they had the market cornered in many ways.
With lots of raw resources, a large population of laborers a strong dollar, many countries owing the USA lots of money and a large military that protected and expanded America economic interests resulted in an economy that grew to the largest in a very short period of time.
A growth that continued for more than 50yrs after WWII.
Canada, left WWII with much more debt and a higher percentage of casualties but it was next to the wealthiest country in the world. The cheap raw resources of Canada and it's advanced technological society (there were many Canadians in the moon program) resulted in Canada and the USA being the worlds largest tradings for more than 50yrs.
