agriculture
It is estimated that 22% of worldwide water use is industrial.[5] Major industrial users include hydroelectric dams, thermoelectric power plants, which use water for cooling, ore and oil refineries, which use water in chemical processes, and manufacturing plants, which use water as a solvent. Water withdrawal can be very high for certain industries, but consumption is generally much lower than that of agriculture.

The following human activities affect water:
1. Urban and Industrial Development: chemicals used in pharmaceutical drugs, dry-cleaning, fossil fuel mixes easily in water and affects water. The use of these chemicals increases as a result of industrialisation an urbanization.
2 Farming: nitrogen and phosporous fertilizers are used as plant nutrients to grow more crops. These plant nutrients are easily dissolved into water and drains with rainwater and snowmelt runoff to affect water streams, ponds etc.
3. Mining: mining activities also affect water.
4. Combustion of fossil fuel affects water,
5. Stream-channel alteration also affects water
6. Animal-feeding operation also a cause of water contamination.
other human activitie affecting water are land use, aerosols, irrigation etc.
Water is a necessary part of living things' survival. Plants and animals - and people - around the world need to consume water in order to survive.
In addition, it is used in many other ways that are important: bathing, staying cool in warm climates, cleaning.
And then there are plenty of recreational activities involving water: swimming, sports, etc.

Humans use water to dispose of exess heat by sweating.
We humans use the most water at the fastest rate in the world. Humans are using up water much much faster than the water is formed deep below rock layers again resulting in rapid depletion of fresh water. At this rate the fresh water supply from underground sources might vanish.
Yes.
They're inconveniently located relative to population centers, for the most part.
