People would lack communications and you would have to travel from one place to another to communicate a message or send a letter. It would be much harder and we are so used to the convenience of just calling someone when it would be a lot harder if we did not have the luxury of the telephone.

On the Lighter side: Well, the telephone plays a huge part in modern society as it is a convenient way of communication to those who are not in vicinity to talk face to face. If it had not been invented... well, lets speculate, shall we?

  1. Radio shows would not get calls for requests, so when a terribly unpleasant song is played, you'd have to sit through it until the next terribly unpleasant song arises.
  2. Horror movies thrive on the phone line being cut when the killer is near, but without phones, they'd have to settle for the killer screaming "I'm in your house now, and ready to get you!!"
  3. People use phones to order take out for dinner and such, so without it, they'd have to walk or drive all the way to the restaurant of choice, order, tell the management their address, walk or drive all the way back home just to sit down then get up again to answer the door.
  4. People would not be able to ignore bill collectors, instead they'd always be taken by surprise when they start yelling outside their house.
  5. When a serious injury occurs, people would have to relay the information through the closest person to them and so forth until it reaches medical assistance rather than use 911; Heaven help them if it's their enemy nearby.

So, those are only a few of the highly inconvenient situations humans would go through had the telephone not been invented.
