My parents were completely baffled, because they never had exposure to a problem like mine. They sometimes acted mean when it was never my intent to upset them. Thankfully, I did get counseling for most of my life, and my paternal grandmother told me to NEVER blame myself for a problem that wasn't my fault.

Grandparents can have the same problem. My maternal grandparents blamed my mother, saying she wasn't strict enough with me and I could behave appropriately if I wanted to. They didn't understand that you can't solve autism spectrum disorders alone - you need professional help.

Unfortunately, some parents and grandparents believe there's no such thing as disabilities and disorders, and that help is available. Children and grandchildren in this situation can suffer permanent psychological damage and even be suicidal.

My mother-in-law showed my wife an article on Aspergers Syndrome. That's how we figured out that our daughter had it. Tell the parent to read the explanation of Aspergers on Wikipedia, and see if they can detect any similarities.

What if your wife has Asperger's Syndrome?

If your wife has Asperger's there is nothing you need to worry about. Aspergers has no cure and is reletively mild on the autistic scale. Aspergers may include things such as OCD, depression, anxiety, besides the traits that mark Aspergers such as having certain almost obessive interests and generally not being very talkative. If you are however concerned such as the possibility of having a child, the odds of the child developing Aspergers is around 80% from what I've read. In most cases from what I've seen and experienced (I have Aspergers) people with Aspergers are fine and prefer to ignore the fact they have it and try to live a normal life. The best thing you can do is treat her to things she likes and not bring the issue up (not unless she has an interest with it :p).
