Although he lost his family, he was aided by his parent's former owners, and others who saw that he had the potential to benefit from education. His desire to learn led to him to travel substantial distances to the few schools that existed for blacks even after Reconstruction (Missouri having had both Union and Confederate governments).

Carver never knew his mother, because she and his brother were kidnapped, and Carver as well, when he was only a week old. Only George was recovered. In 1877, at the age of 12, he walked to a school ten miles away. At 13, he moved to Fort Scott, Kansas. After witnessing the death of a black man at the hands of whites, he moved again, finally settling in Minneapolis where he graduated from high school in 1882.

In the South, farmers grew mostly coton. Certain bugs were devouring this an resulting in poor crops. Peanuts were not affected by these bugs. The problem with peanuts is that they were good for nothing at the time. Carver found multiple uses for them and convinced souther farmers to plant them. Thus saving the south's economy.
