The Iroquois was (or is) not one tribe, but a group of several different tribes.

The Iroquois was a Confederation (hence the term Iroquois Confederation) of many different tribes. The tribes recognized each other's sovereignty, but agreed to assist and collaborate with each other.

They resembled a "United Nations" of native tribes more than any particular native country.

The Iroquois Confederation's organizational document was used as a reference in writing the United States Constitution.
