The Iroquois was (or is) not one tribe, but a group of several different tribes.
The Iroquois was a Confederation (hence the term Iroquois Confederation) of many different tribes. The tribes recognized each other's sovereignty, but agreed to assist and collaborate with each other.
They resembled a "United Nations" of native tribes more than any particular native country.
The Iroquois Confederation's organizational document was used as a reference in writing the United States Constitution.
Political structure of the Iroquois allowed them to cooperate (the different tribes), which made them strong, but at times like the American Revolution, were people had to decide which side to support, the nations of the Iroquois could choose differently, thus creating an unstable environment.
