Steven Johnson Syndrome is a deadly skin disease that results from a catastrophic reaction to a drug or a micro-organism. Another term for the disease is Toxic Epiderymal Necrolosis. Although there are many drugs linked to SJS almost any medicine could cause it as the syndrome is dependant on the immunological response of the body. Viral infections such as cat scratch fever, influenza, herpes, mumps and the Epstein-Barr virus can cause infection. Symptons include red rash or marks on the face, neck and nape of neck. The eyes are swollen and there is a general feeling of being unwell. When it is in an advanced stage the rash covers the whole body and resembles scalded or burnt skin with blistering. A lot of doctors are not familiar with SJS and hospital treatment is essential as it can be a fatal allergy.
