The most common legend concerning the Cherokee Rose is that during the Trail of Tears (1838).

The mothers were crying so hard in leaving their native lands, and the difficulty of the journey, that the elders prayed for a sign that would give them strength and hope. The next day, when the women cried a rose would take the place of the fallen tear.

  • The rose is white for their tears.
  • The gold center represents the gold taken from the Cherokee land.
  • The seven leaves on each stem represent the seven Cherokee clans.
This wild rose is still said to be growing along the route of the exodus from Georgia into eastern Oklahoma.
