You are probably referring to something called "Grenz Rays" which is a form of 'soft x-rays". It falls 'next to' the traditional x-ray portion of the radiation spectrum (in German, the term grenz means 'next to"). It has been beneficial in treating inflammatory conditions of the skin (eczema/dermatitis) especially of the hands, and also itchy skin (pruritus). It is not commonly used, but some (older) dermatologists still use it with very good results.
