The mihrab is an Architectural device, which has no holiness attached to it, and is simply used to show which direction to face so that one is oriented towards the House of Abraham in Mecca. It is in the shape of a half-circle so as to help project the voice of the person leading the prayer back behind. That way, the people following the prayer behind him (or her, if it is a case of a woman leading other women in the prayer) can better hear the recitation.
