These days, most any litho or digital printer will request you send them a PDF/X-1a:2001 with bleed and crop marks set. Most modern day page layout applications like InDesign and Quark Xpress will export this format. You must also make sure that any images you have linked to the documents are of a proper resolution (dpi) for press. This is at least 2x the line screen of the press (120 line screen x2 = 240dpi min). Also, be careful not to over-enlarge the images. You can have a perfectly nice 300dpi image placed in the document that looks terrible on press because you have cropped in on one little detail of the image and it has been enlarged over 300% ... which would make the effective resolution of the image on press only 100dpi, and it would probably look fuzzy.
