The double bass or contrabass is the instrument in the modern day orchestra that has the rythems and the 'bass line' of the song. It is the second largest instrument in the string family and the second lowest-pitched bowed stringed instrument, second only to the octobass (as far as I know).

The Double Bass (also called String Bass or Contrabass) is a stringed musical instrument. They are the lowest members (and the largest) of the (bowed) string family of orchestral instruments.

They can be played arco. (with a bow) or pizzicato (which is where the strings are plucked). The two genres they are perhaps most well know for playing in would be Classical and Jazz. Strings usually tuned to E1, A1, D2 and G2 (in intervals of 4ths).

The Double Bass is a transposing instrument and sounds one octave lower than music is written on the stave.
