Well to know the real answer you would have to ask him. However a few likely explanations is that he is getting older, does not practise enough and that he was never really able to play as well as the drumming on the albums. Much can be done in a studio and Flemming Rasmussen(the producer of ...and justice for all, among others) is rumoured to have said "the recording of ...and justice for all would have taken 3 months less if Lars Ulrich could play the drums"
