Ferretin is a protein in the blood that binds to iron. It is found in the liver, spleen, skeletal muscles, and bone marrow. A small amount can be found in the blood.
The amount of ferritin in the blood indicates how much iron the body can store at that time, but not how much iron the body has.
A normal value of ferritin in the blood is >20ng/mL. In old people, this number is higher.
Borderline deficient: 13-20ng/mLDeficient: 0-12ng/mLExcessive: >400ng/mL
What COULD an abnormal value mean?
Higher:Acute hepatitis, Acute myocardial infarction, anemia other than iron deficiency, chronic inflammatory disease, chronic renal disease, cirrhosis of the liver, hemochromatosis, hemosiderosis, Hodgkin's disease, hyperthyroidism, infection, malignancy, polycythemia, rheumatoid arthritis, thalassemia
Lower: GI surgery, hemodialysis, inflammatory bowel disease, iron-deficiency anemia, malnutrition, menstruation, and/or pregnancy
Hope this helped!- Brittany :)
Have ferritin level of 587 & a fatty liver & cholesterol of 6.9
Ferritin is a protein that stores iron. Low ferritin is a precursor to anemia, so if you do nothing about the low ferritin level your iron level will eventually drop.
is a level of 17.50 in ferritin blood test consider low in a male 66 years old
Anaemia can be associated with low ferritin and high Folate levels.
you may have hereditry hemochromatosis
ferritin

If ferritin is high, there is iron in excess or else there is an acute inflammatory reaction in which ferritin is mobilized without iron excess. For example, ferritins may be high in infection without signalling body iron overload.Ferritin is also used as a marker for iron overload disorders, such as hemochromatosis or hemosiderosis. Adult-onset Still's disease, porphyria, and Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis are diseases in which the ferritin level may be abnormally raised. As ferritin is also an acute-phase reactant, it is often elevated in the course of disease. A normal C-reactive protein can be used to exclude elevated ferritin caused by acute phase reactions.According to a study of anorexia nervosa patients, ferritin can be elevated during periods of acute malnourishment
ferritin is the major soluble iron storage protein and caan be measured in serun . transferrin carries iron in serun
infections, late-stage cancers, lymphomas, and severe inflammations. Alcoholics often have high ferritin levels.
yes
An apoferritin is a form of ferritin which is not combined with iron.
