You need to invent your own names - writers who copy ideas from other people end up in trouble for plagiarism! If you copy someone's names or ideas, then when you publish your story, they could claim you stole those from them and sue you for part of your money.

I use online name generators for the names of my secondary characters - the main characters, I take my time and choose special names from baby name books!

It depends on whether it is a male or a female. Do not name it anything close to people you know or who might think that you wrote the book about them. If you can't get it at first, pick a letter, and then put in the name when the time is right. Also it is really important to use the name you pick in different situations so that it best fits the character. :)

Look around. There are great names all around you. Look at the names in the credits of a movie or TV show. Look at the telephone book. If you want more ideas, you can also search "baby names" on the internet. Those places have a lot of given names to choose from!

When you find a name you like, jot it down. You may not want to use it right away, but you could use it later.

When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was writing a book about a detective, he remembered that he had once played cricket against a bowler called Sherlock. Years later, he used that name for his character Sherlock Holmes.
