"Light year" is a distance. It's defined as the distance light travels in one year,

through vacuum.

That's a huge distance compared to the daily experience of human beings ... about

5,874,600,000,000,000 miles, or more than 31 thousand round trips to the sun and back.

It's used in discussion of the distances between objects in space, and it actually

turns out to be not a so large a unit at all. The nearest star outside of our solar

system is about 4.2 light years distant from us, and the nearest galaxy outside of

our Milky Way is about 2.5 million light years distant from us.

A light year is a measurement of distance. It is the distance light travels in the vacuum of free space in one year. The speed of light is 186,282 miles per second. There are 31,536,000 seconds in a year.

31,536,000 x 186,282 = 5,874,589,152,000

One light year = 5,874,589,152,000 miles. That's 5 trillion, 874 billion, 589 million, 152 thousand miles.

A light-year is a unit of length equal to the distance that light travels through vacuum

in a year (about 5,787,499,810,000 miles). It is often confused as a unit of time.

The official definition of a light year uses the Julian year of 365.25 days and the speed of light 2.99792458 times 10 to the power 8 metres/sec, so a light year is 9.460730473 times 10 to the power 15 metres or 5,878,625,373,180 miles.

A light-year is a unit of length, equal to just under 10 trillion kilometres (i.e. 1016 metres)

A light year is a measure of distance. It is the distance light travels through the vacuum of space in one year's time; about 5.86 trillion miles.

How old can a child grasp the concept of murder?

It depends on the circumstances. My four, nearly five, year old understood the concept, but this was where a parent was involved. Yet my seven year old nephew did not understand and to this day still doesn't. It also depends on whether the child understands the concept of death or not as I believe this is the problem my nephew faced. I also know that at three years a child will definitely not understand as the chances are they still don't understand death as meaning someone is gone.

Why is a light year a unit of distance rather than time?

A light year is a distance measurement because it would take something a year travelling at the speed of light to cross. It is called a light year because it helps astrologers/scientists understand the vastness of the distance between two things; for example, Our Galaxy (The Milky Way Galaxy) and our nearest Galaxy (Andromeda Galaxy)
