Prophylaxis is any medical procedure which aim is to prevent the contraction of a medical disease or ailment, rather than to cure it after it has been contracted. Things which can be prevented include measles, mumps and polio through vaccination. Condoms can be used to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. In some cases a healthy diet and regular exercise can be considered a prophylaxis; as doing so can help reduce the likelihood of diseases such as coronary Heart disease.
