A male horse is a stallion. Stallions that live together in a herd are called bachler stallions. They live together when they cant get or find any mares. (females) A small group of any horses/mares/stallions would be basiclly a band or a small herd. For example a stallion might have a band of mares or be in a band with other studs.

Stallions can be found in lots of places. A stallion is just a male horse that has not been gelded. A Gelding is a male horse that can't mate with a female and make the mare have babies. Geldings are also usually better tempered than a Stallion.
Most horses will protect themselves by fleeing. If necessary, they may kick out with their back legs as they flee. Stallions may fight by biting and kicking other stallions to win the right to mate with all the mares in the herd.
